Erasmus+ BIP Summer School Brings Together Students from Five European Universities

In August 2026, the Faculty of Technology at Tomas Bata University in Zlín hosted an international Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) summer school focused on environmental technologies and science. The intensive programme brought together students from five European partner universities, offering them an opportunity to expand their knowledge of environmental engineering and gain hands-on experience with advanced laboratory techniques.

The summer school combined online learning with a week of intensive in-person activities in Zlín.

Students from Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, the University of Maribor, Tallinn University of Technology, Łódź University of Technology, and Graz University of Technology took part in the programme.

The academic programme featured lectures on current issues and emerging trends in environmental engineering. Topics included the biodegradation of chemicals and polymers in the environment, metagenomics, nano-, bio-, and electrochemical technologies, the removal of persistent organic pollutants, and advanced oxidation processes for water treatment.

Lectures and training sessions were delivered by experts from the Faculty of Technology as well as Czech and international partner institutions. A key component of the summer school was a series of hands-on workshops, where students worked in small groups to tackle practical challenges related to environmental protection.

During the workshops, participants explored the degradation of dyes in water using ozonation, collected and analysed real environmental samples, determined waste composition using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, assessed ecotoxicity with bioluminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri, and investigated the electrochemical degradation of pharmaceuticals in water.

The academic programme was complemented by a field trip to KOVOZOO and an informal evening gathering around a campfire, featuring traditional Czech špekáčky. These social activities gave participants an opportunity to get to know one another beyond the classroom and helped foster connections among students and academics from across Europe.

The summer school concluded with a review of the workshop results, a final quiz, and a certificate ceremony for all participants.
